Edinburgh Airport

The busiest airport in Scotland – and seventh busiest in the whole of the UK – is Edinburgh Airport which is located less than six miles from Edinburgh city centre in the Turnhouse district. With over nine million passengers passing through a year, the airport is ideally situated within easy reach of the M8 motorway and is a major transport hub for the country of Scotland.

Both Easyjet and Ryanair – leading players in the budget airline world of today – have major bases at Edinburgh, and the list of destinations reached from the airport is comprehensive and impressive. All the major European holiday destinations – the likes of Barcelona, Paris and Rome among them – plus a wide range of national airports including London Heathrow and Gatwick are all reached by regular scheduled flights, while charter flights add to the roster in the holiday season. Edinburgh is also a major cargo airport, and in terms of aircraft movements annually is the fifth busiest in the UK.

Future expansion involves a planned light rail link that will improve the already excellent transport links, with £250 million planned spending over the next decade on general improvement and upgrading.

Edinburgh Airport features very modern facilities with a range of shops and cafes, long term parking and nearby hotels, and a planned extension of the runway plus an additional terminal is set to increase the capacity of the airport to 20 million passengers a year by 2020 by allowing direct flights to long haul destinations that currently cannot be accommodated thanks to the length of the runway.
